| Course description | This is the first course of a certificate which aims to develop leadership knowledge and understanding and leadership and organisational skills, and to enable participants to reflect critically on the understanding and skills they acquire. Course participants will be able both to develop and demonstrate their understanding of the principles of educational leadership through developing awareness of their leadership potential and exploration of the nature of teacher leadership. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Development of knowledge and understanding of:
&ˇ the nature of leadership in schools and the role of values
&ˇ teacher leadership
&ˇ the contested nature of professionalism and the role of the teacher
&ˇ professional learning and their development as a leader
&ˇ self evaluation for development
Development of skill in:
&ˇ gathering evidence including feedback to make an informed self evaluation
&ˇ identifying their leadership skills within their current role
&ˇ evaluating and critically reflect on their leadership practice
&ˇ identifying and justifying their professional development needs in relation to leadership
&ˇ reflecting critically upon a range of theoretical perspectives on leadership
&ˇ making more informed and effective decisions in their practice in leadership
&ˇ presenting the outcomes of a self evaluation |
Assessment Information
Assessment will consist of two equally weighted components.
1. A reflective discussion and review of the development of the participant&Šs leadership skills, supported by illustrative examples. The discussion will include a review of the participant&Šs next steps for professional development. The participant will carry out an evaluation using feedback from significant colleagues that will inform the critical self-assessment. The length of the discussion will be 2000 words +/- 10%.
2. A critical review of issues relating to leadership and, drawing from practice and experience, the implications for the development of practice in schools. The length of the critical review will be 2000 words +/- 10%. |
Special Arrangements
| Delivery can be on/off campus at summer school or on weekends and evenings dependent on cohort. It involves developing web based supportive networks and participants will be invited to join the course at set times to ensure this is manageable |
