Course description | This course aims to equip the teacher with sufficient knowledge and skills to be able to interpret audiological information and assess the provision of audiological support to the deaf child. The course also aims to provide the teacher with an understanding of why audiology has often been viewed negatively by Deaf consumers. Teachers will learn how to discuss the implications of audiological information sensitively with a range of deaf learners and deaf / hearing parents. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of the process of hearing and the nature of sound;
- Have an understanding of the key causes of deafness;
- Have a critical understanding of the procedures used to diagnose and assess hearing loss;
- Be able to interpret and evaluate audiological information;
- Be able to evaluate the appropriateness of hearing aids;
- Have an awareness of key issues, including professional and ethical issues with regard to cochlear implantation;
- Be familiar with and able to evaluate critically research in this field;
- Be able to critically evaluate the traditional model of audiology and to place present-day audiological practice within a broader context;
- Be aware of the differing roles played by audiologists within different authorities and have an understanding of the possible approaches to collaboration between audiology professionals and teachers of deaf children. |
Assessment Information
Course members will
- Participate in an assessed workshop. This will involve tasks relating to interpreting audiological evidence, testing, and where possible repair of hearing aids and use of a range of audiological equipment. (15% of final mark);
- Participate in a simulated interview with a parent of a deaf child. This will require interpretation of audiological information, evaluation of current provision and the proffering of advice and guidance to the parent and deaf pupil. (15% of final mark);
- Produce a written assignment of 2,000 words/20 minutes of signing relating to the application of audiology/audiometry within education (45% of the final mark);
- Produce a written assignment of 1,000 words/10 minutes of signing, involving a critical reflection of the ethical/professional issues relating to either:
- audiological practice within a broader context (including reference to cochlear implantation)
or
- cochlear implantation specifically
