Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Course members will
o Demonstrate an awareness of the different types of discourse associated with deafness;
o Be aware of the different constructions (eg social, medical) of deafness;
o Show a critical understanding of the notions of Deaf Community and Deaf Culture;
o Be familiar with the key aspects of Deaf history and heritage;
o Be familiar with and be able to use the resources of a range of d/Deaf organisations;
o Be familiar with the history of Deaf Education and its relation to present-day d/Deaf perspectives on Deaf Education;
o Be familiar with Deaf media, including magazines, journals, regular television programmes.

Assessment Information
Course members will
o Undertake a critical review of a text which focuses on the Deaf World or Deaf Community (the text may support these notions or be critical of them).
o Undertake a critical review of a signed TV programme such as the Sign On debate on Deafness and Disability or one of the See Hear programmes on Deaf History (1000 words / 10 minutes BSL).
o Produce a written or signed assignment of 3000 words/30 minutes signing. Course members will be given a choice of assignment questions and titles.
