Course description | The interaction of diet and dietary factors with sports training can have a profound effect upon performance. This module will include a comprehensive overview of nutrition and metabolism. Food (protein, carbohydrates, fats) and nutritive factors including water, vitamins, minerals and their role in sport training and performance as well as the role of dietary manipulations for weight gain and loss in a sports context will be addressed. Identification of abnormal eating patterns and eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia and obesity will be considered in the context of sport performance and physical fitness. The efficacy of nutritional and non-nutritional ergogenic aids will be examined.
Learning outcomes will be achieved by methods including lectures, demonstrations, workshops and directed reading. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
At the completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Describe basic biochemical pathways dealing with protein, carbohydrate and fat metabolism
2. Discuss recommended intakes of protein, carbohydrates, fats, micronutrients and fluids for optimal athletic performance and training.
3. Critically evaluate the potential shortcomings for the RDA and RNI in relation to sports training.
4. Assess the effects of dietary manipulation on performance and weight control.
5. Analyse and evaluate the potential effects of various types of nutritional factors (i.e. dietary manipulations and supplements) and drugs which may act as ergogenic aids
6. Describe eating disorders such as bulimia, anorexia, obesity and the female athlete triad. |
Assessment Information
Assessment will include a term paper on a topic approved by the module co-ordinator and a written examination. The examination will incorporate short answers, essays and may require the interpretation of data. Examination - 2hrs (weighting 50% of module). Assignment - 2000 words (weighting 50% of module). |
