Course description | This module covers the techniques and principles for evaluating materials. It trains students to adapt materials in a variety of ways and to devise texts and tasks to supplement published materials, in the light of current research in evaluation and design of TESOL materials. It examines ways of involving learners in materials evaluation and design. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, students will have demonstrated an:
1. Understanding of a variety of techniques for evaluating materials;
2. Understanding of the principles from which these techniques derive;
3. Ability to evaluate teaching/learning materials;
4. Ability to analyse tasks and the components of which they are composed;
5. Ability to adapt materials in a variety of ways;
6. Ability to select and devise texts and tasks to supplement published materials;
7. Understanding of key issues in the layout of text-based materials;
8. Ability to involve learners in materials evaluation and design;
9. Ability to evaluate current research issues in evaluation and design of TESOL materials. |
Assessment Information
There are two parts to the assessment. The students:
a) make a proposal for materials adaptation/design
b) evaluate these materials.
They submit:
- their materials, or a representative section of them;
- the materials evaluation that they carried out;
- a rationale for the materials design and the evaluation;
- a statement of what they have learnt by carrying out these tasks;
- a statement of how the materials and design relate to current research issues in evaluation and design of TESOL materials.
The assignment is 5,000 words in length. |
