Course description | This module aims to provide participants with the linguistic knowledge and analysis skills required to operate professionally in teaching a foreign language. It reviews the ways in which spoken and written language is described and organised for pedagogic purposes and provides opportunities to select and analyse materials for teaching foreign languages. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, course members will be able to:
1.1 understand and use the metalanguage for pedagogic description and analysis of spoken and written English text;
1.2 understand and employ the principles of selection and grading of language items in a TESOL syllabus;
1.3 understand the principles underlying effective teacher use of the language in the classroom. |
Assessment Information
The assessment will consist of a series of four folio tasks and a final assignment.
For the folio tasks participants will analyse selected passages using systems of grammatical, lexical, phonological and discoursal description. Each of these tasks will require an essay of 1,000 words. Participants will then select one passage - either spoken or written - for potential use with a class of learners.
They will undertake an analysis of their chosen text, identifying how it could be used for teaching purposes. The assignment will require students to provide the analysis of their chosen text along with a rationale and evaluation of the suitability of the text for teaching purposes. This assignment will require an essay of no more than 3,000 words. |
