| Course description | This course provides an opportunity for aspiring primary teachers to develop further their knowledge and understanding of the Expressive Arts as they constitute a generic curricular area in the primary school, and to develop a degree of specialist knowledge in one particular area of the Expressive Arts. The fusion of theoretical and practical knowledge developed in the course will be applied systematically to a rigorous consideration of curriculum and pedagogical issues which are of direct relevance to the professional preparation of teachers of children of primary school age. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The student will be able to demonstrate an understanding of key tenets of a range of Expressionist Theories of Art, Art Criticism and the contribution of the Arts to contemporary society and culture, with focus on:
1. how these can be applied to inform and deepen their knowledge and understanding through engagement with a range of practical Arts activities in Art, Drama, Music and Physical Education.
2. how these can be applied to inform teaching, learning and assessment in the Expressive Arts across the 3-12 age range in Scottish Primary Education.
3. developing their knowledge and understanding of contemporary physical education curricula to demonstrate developmentally appropriate practice in their planning and delivery of physical education learning experiences
In addition the student should also be able to demonstrate an ability to construct a systematic, analytical and reflective portfolio that monitors personal and professional development in Arts Education.

Assessment Information
A single assessment based on one academic essay (3,000 words).
Students will be required to gain a final mark of at least 40% to pass the course, in accordance with the university marking scheme for Honours (Year 3).
In addition, as a course requirement, students are expected to maintain a reflective portfolio, logging with critical annotation key aspects of their personal and professional development. |
