Course description | This half course is intended to progress and/or develop distinctive skills, knowledge and their application in the field of design and manufacture. Building on the skills developed in Design Principles and Practices 1, Manufacture Principles and Practices1, this course is largely project-based and will extend students&© awareness and understanding of economic, environmental, ethical and social issues in design and development. It links directly with experiences, learning outcomes and assessment requirements for Manufacture Principles and Practices 2.
It explores some of the themes of Education 2 Philosophical and Sociological Perspectives on Curriculum Assessment, Pedagogy and Social Justice, specifically interdisciplinary learning and cross curriculum projects, the nature of knowledge, exploration of values and assumptions. It examines the contribution designing and design activity as a pedagogical approach offers teaching and learning. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Consider consequences of design and manufacture on the environment and on society, as well as ethical and economic issues.
2. Critically analyse scenarios and recognise and respond to conflicting and
complex issues in design development.
3. Understand the role of digital technologies in design and realization to make in formed Selection, application and integration of appropriate technologies.
4. Demonstrate a broad knowledge of sociological, psychological, motivational theories, principles and concepts related to design activity as an innate human trait and driver for change development.
5. Discuss research related to design learning, explore issues of progression and identify aspects for further investigation. |
Assessment Information
1. Extended illustrated report on Scotland's contribution to the field of technological development including consideration of social, environmental, economic issues and how this informs the construct of Design and Technology Education. (2000 words) 40%
2. Individual design project: digital portfolio and design proposal in response to scenarios 60% |
