Course description | This course is designed to introduce students to some key educational concepts and provide a forum for debate and discussion of some of the issues associated with the provision, experience and outcomes of education. The course comprises ?Lifespan Development and Socialisation? and ?Learning and Teaching?. Throughout the course we will explore the ways in which individuals and groups experience education in its various forms in Scotland and elsewhere. The course will also inform students? preparation for their work based placement, or equivalent activities, as appropriate |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students will be able to:
? Identify contrasting perspectives on learning theory
? Engage effectively in the study of theoretical principles underpinning teaching and learning and of the different contexts in which these activities take place
? Critically consider what makes for effective learning in specific contexts for particular learners
? Contrast perspectives that relate to human development and socialisation across the lifespan
? Adopt a critical attitude to questions relating to learning, teaching, lifespan development and socialisation
? Support preparation for their work-based placements, or equivalent, and understand the relationships between professional action and theoretical perspectives.

Assessment Information
Assessment
Formative assessment comprises peer, self and tutor assessment of three PDP entries which are submitted online.
Summative assessment comprises:
? a piece of analytical writing (2000 words) demonstrating an ability to identify contrasting perspectives on learning theory and lifespan development and socialisation and the application of these theoretical perspectives to professional action.
Students are required to obtain a pass grade (40%) in the summative assessment
