| Course description | This course focuses on, and theorises, a level of cummunication that is almost never theorised, although it is alluded to in vernacular conversation. eg 'the energy in the room' or 'the atmosphere was dead'. It is an inevitable and important aspect of every relationship, including the therapeutic relationship. As such it is important that therapists are aware of it and are able to reflect upon its impact on the therapeutic relationship. The aim is to help students develop an analytic awareness of the level of communication that happens as counsellor and client extend and withdraw at a very subtle level. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students should be able to:-
1 Identify the subtle ways in which they make themselves available or unavailable for psychological contact with clients.
2 become more aware of the subtle non-verbal and non-visual communication that takes place within the therapeutic relationship.
3 work sensitively with the subtleties of misinterpretation at this level of communication.
4 conceptualise, explore and resolve such miscommunication when it does arise.

Assessment Information
| One 4,000 to 5,000 word essay analysing a key theme of relevance to the therapeutic relationship deriving from experiences of the experiential component of the course. |
