| Course description | This course provides an advanced exploration, analysis and application of the therapeutic relationship as conceptualised within the person-centred approach and psychodynamic perspectives. It examines current debates in counselling and psychotherapy. Key themes and issues are related to the therapeutic work in which practitioners engage. Students are therefore expected to draw on their own therapeutic work within class sessions. The ethical and confidentiality issues raised by this are discussed in the first session. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The aim or this course is to enable students to develop their theoretical understanding of counselling practice and their therapeutic skills through focused examination of therapeutic relationships. By the end of the course students should have:-
1) An advanced understanding of the significance of the therapeutic relationship in the theory and practice of person-centred and psychodynamic counselling.
2) A heightened awareness of the impact of difference, diversity and power in counselling practice.
3) The capacity to conceptualise, analyse and present the development and impact of therapeutic relationships with reference to the student's own practice. |
Assessment Information
| One 4,000-5,000 word essay analysing the therapeutic relationship with reference to the student's own counselling practice. As with all Counselling Studies assessed tasks, students will critically reflect on the practice of counselling, examine their own professional context and practice and integrate relevant research. |
