| Course description | This course provides a focused examination of the provision of counselling within health care settings. It investigates the evolution of counselling in this context, the research base which has informed its development and the policies and funding arrangements that enable it. Topics include the distinctive features of counselling in health care settings, including referral criteria and procedures, dual roles of health care personnel who also provide counselling, ethical dilemmas, interdisciplinary practice and the evidence base of counselling in health care settings with respect to health outcomes and the utilisation of health resources. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The aim of this course is to enable the student to understand the distinctive features of the practice of counselling in health care settings. By the end of the course students should be able to:-
1) Identify and analyse the distinctive features of the provision of counselling in health care settings, including the key practice issues for counsellors.
2) Critically assess the evolution of counselling within health care settings in the context of the development of counselling as a profession, of health policies and the mixed economy of care.
3) Analyse issues of difference, diversity and power in the practice of counselling in health care settings.
4) Evaluate the evidence base of counselling in health care with respect to health outcomes and the utilisation of health resources. |
Assessment Information
| One 4,000-5,000 word essay analysing one of the themes discussed in the course. As with all Counselling Studies assessed tasks, students will critically reflect on the practice of counselling, examine their own professional context and practice, and integrate relevant research. |
