| Course description | The course introduces the major concepts in translation theory and focuses on their application to translation practice. It deals with issues of equivalence, formal properties of texts as objects for analysis at linguistic, semantic, discourse, and pragmatic levels, and emphasises the importance of a functional approach to translation. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students will be provided with a comprehensive overview of the discipline of translation studies, raising their awareness of both the diversity of possible approaches to translation and the relationships between these approaches. Through the translation + commentary essays submitted for this course, the students will learn to think critically about and be more conscious of their own translation practice.
Each week the students will be expected to read key theoretical texts in the discipline. Through these reading, they will be exposed to the paradigms that underpin the various approaches in translation studies, and to a coherent critical vocabulary to describe and explain translation phenomena. These readings and the ensuing discussions will enhance students' critical faculties, helping them to discern the strengths and weaknesses of these different approaches.

Assessment Information
| Assessed by a translation + commentary essay of 4,000 words to be completed by the end of the semester. Students will give an oral presentation of their essays towards the end of the semester before submission. |
