| Course description | During their third year abroad while studying for these combined degrees, students carry out guided reading under the supervision of a member of the School of History, Classics and Archaeology and write an essay on a historical theme which makes use of the language that they are studying. The essays are handed in on the student's return at the beginning of Year 4. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
-identify a research topic
-construct a bibliography of secondary works on the chosen topic
-demonstrate independent research skills
-show the ability to work independently towards a set deadline and word limit
-review a large body of literature and produce coherent analytical text. |
Assessment Information
| The essay is the sole component of assessment. Assessment is carried over to the fourth year in line with the standard practice for modern language degree programmes. |
