| Course description | The course will provide a theoretical and practical introduction to the knowledge and techniques required to approach the Gaelic manuscript record. Teaching will consist of one two-hour session per week, split between a one-hour lecture and an hour of practical work which will include reading practice, transcription, and editorial exercises. The course will aim to balance the provision of practical palaeographical skills with an introduction to and exploration of the conceptual framework required to handle texts in their manuscript contexts. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
| Students will be given practical training in Gaelic palaeography and editorial methods, and introduced to appropriate aspects of the training of Gaelic scribes and poets, the historical development of scripts and orthography, and theoretical approaches to manuscript compilation and layout. The course aims to develop competence in reading and transcribing unedited Gaelic texts and an understanding of the way in which different editorial and theoretical approaches to manuscript sources can provide a methodology for approaching textual study. |
Assessment Information
Essay (2,000-2,500 words) and selection of transcription and editorial exercises: 50% (25% + 25%)
Degree Examination (2 hours): 50%
