| Course description | The course will consist primarily of close analytical readings of a range of short stories by leading Gaelic prose writers from 1960 onwards, including Iain Mac a' Ghobhainn (Iain Crichton Smith), Màrtainn Mac an t-Saoir, Cailein T. MacCoinnich, Donnchadh MacGill'Ìosa, Iain Moireach and Eilidh Watt. In addition to considering the dominant themes and questions addressed by these writers, the course will give close attention to questions of structure and narrativity, and the difficult evolution of new literary genres in Gaelic. The texts studied will be placed in the context of the work of other twentieth-century prose writers and of Gaelic literature and culture more generally. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
| This course is intended to develop students' awareness of the thematic range, narrative devices and linguistic styles of important modern Scottish Gaelic short stories, by a combination of close reading of primary texts, class discussion, and reference to relevant secondary literature. |
Assessment Information
| 1 class presentation 20%, 1 essay 30%, Degree Examination 50%. The Degree Examination consists of a single 2-hour paper to be sat in the May/June diet. |
