| Course description | This course covers core principles of diagnostic imaging and surgery (introduction to surgical principles, concepts and methodology), anaesthesia and anaesthesia relating to the systems and core principles and concepts of pharmacology. This course provides a foundation for the subsequent species based integrated clinical modules. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course students should:
Understand the principles of operative surgical techniques, basic surgical concepts and wound management
Understand the principles of diagnostic imaging and interpretation of radiographic and sonographic images.
Understand the general features of the distribution, actions and elimination of drugs in domestic animals
Understand the significant properties of the main classes of medicinal product used in veterinary medicine
Demonstrate and understand safe use of simple anaesthetic hardware.
Be able to discuss case management of simple and advanced cases.
Be able to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of anaesthetic techniques and drugs.
Recognise the risks associated with drugs and equipment used in veterinary anaesthetic practise.

Objective Structured Clinical Examination ? Pass/Fail [candidates failing the OSCE will have two resit opportunities during the second semester. Two final opportunities to repeat this examination will be held in the presence of the external examiner]
