Course description | The course focusses on the nature of society in modern Japan, from the mid-19th century but with particular emphasis on the present day. The distinctively Japanese forms of social organization will be assessed, as will the far-reaching effects of Western influence and social forms. Where appropriate, analysis of pre-modern forms of Japanese society will be presented. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The course aims to deepen students' understanding of the special nature of Japanese society, especially in the light of their experiences during their year abroad. It will also seek to develop their skills in the use of library resources (both conventional and electronic) and fieldwork (where appropriate), the collating and synthesis of materials, oral presentation, discussion on prescribed themes, and academic writing. |
