Course description | The course offers a critical introduction to traditional Japanese theatre in its historical, cultural and performative context.
Detailed attention will be paid to noh, kabuki and bunraku, all of which combine acting, music and dance and continue to be performed regularly in contemporary Japan.
The relationship between performance and text, and the concept of "performance as text," will be central to the course content, and will be presented through analysis of audio-visual performance recordings as well as the scripts of selected plays.
Writings on noh, bunraku and kabuki that provide researchers with theoretical background to training and performance, playwriting and appreciation of these traditional forms will also introduced and discussed, particularly from the perspective of modern anglophone scholarship.
