Course description | This course examines Japanese performing arts from the Meiji period (1868-1912) to the present day in the context of their interface with performing arts outside Japan. The main areas for consideration will be the influence of non-Japanese performing art forms on the development of Japanese performing arts and the influence of Japanese performing arts, particularly the traditional genres, on performative trends worldwide. Particular attention will be paid to the reception of Japanese performing arts abroad and to examples of non-Japanese performances that draw on techniques of performance originating from Japanese theatre.
