| Course description | This option examines the Chinese literary revolution which resulted in the building of a new and modern literary canon in Late Qing and Republican China. Looking at institutional, linguistic, textual and stylistic changes, which lead to the constitution of a Chinese modernity in urban centers will serve as the background for interpreting sample literary texts of this period.
We will also discuss in how far the adoption of the vernacular as a national language and the establishment of the new literature justifies to interpret the May Fourth Movement as a Chinese Renaissance (similar to the European), and look at the motivations behind the choice of specific foreign models for emulation.
