| Course description | On the basis of practical exercises in a variety of examples of non-fiction Japanese, the course offers students the opportunity to hone the translation skills acquired during their year abroad. Special attention is paid to syntactical and stylistic analysis as a prerequisite for developing flexible translation strategies which produce accurate, fluent and idiomatic solutions to the challenges posed by advanced-level Japanese texts. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
| The course aims to give students the ability to deal with any Japanese material which one can reasonably expect to encounter in the course of everyday life and work in a Japanese context. Students will be able to translate Japanese texts fluently and idiomatically, with the help of appropriate reference materials. They will also learn to account for their translations, by providing annotation which is respectively content-related (e.g. accounting for cultural factors) and technical (e.g. explanations of the differing demands of Japanese and English syntax). |
Assessment Information
| One short translation of a designated piece, due in mid-semester (25%); one substantial, full annotated translation project, due at the end of the semester (75%). |
