Course description | The course enables students to acquire fluency in modern spoken (Mandarin) and written Chinese through interative class work, tutorials and language laboratory practice. Throughout the course, language learning is placed in the cultural context of the Chinese speaking world today.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students acquire a solid foundation in the grammar and phonetics of the Chinese language and fundamental skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. A sensitivity to the historical and cultural context of the Chinese speaking world is also encouraged. |

Study Pattern |
Chinese 1 has a one-hour lecture on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Lecture Group A meets from 10am to 11am; Lecture Group B meets from 11am to 12pm.
There is also a one-hour writing tutorial on Monday afternoons: Group A meets from 2pm to 3pm; Group B meets from 3pm to 4pm.
There is also a one-hour oral tutorial on Fridays at 10am.
Finally, there is a one-hour language lab session; select from Tuesday 12-1pm, Wednesday 9-10am, Wednesday 12-1pm or Thursday 9-10am. |
