| Course description | This module provides the student with an opportunity to investigate an architectural topic negotiated with a member of academic staff. The student will undertake sustained and in-depth research and present a coherently argued, fully referenced and appropriately illustrated piece of academic writing. Preparation and research for the module is undertaken in the first Semester; this provides the student with an opportunity to plan and organise the study materials and research methods required in the writing of the Dissertation. This process culminates in the submission of a synopsis and bibliography. In the second Semester, the dissertation is developed and written. Aims - The module will: 1. Develop research methods relevant to writing a dissertation. 2. Develop the student&©s intellectual curiosity relating to the dissertation topic. 3. Gain knowledge of a specific aspect of architecture, history and theory, technology, environment, architectural design or related disciplines of arts, cultural studies and landscape and its application in critical debate. 4. Develop skills in the use of library and research sources including the use of websites and electronic methods of deriving information. 5. Develop skills in correct writing style, grammar and syntax and the correct use and acknowledgement of sources. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to demonstrate:
1. Detailed knowledge of the chosen subject demonstrating sufficient understanding of relevant cultural, historical and philosophical themes;
2. 2. Ability to construct and synthesise an intellectual argument expressed against stated objectives and presenting original conclusions.
3. 3. Ability to product a substantial piece of academic writing, coherent, attractive, illustrated, well-written, using correct referencing conventions and the acknowledgement of sources.
