Course description | The course will explore the relationship between architecture and the human body in early modern Britain. Architecture has always had a complex relationship with the human body. In the early modern period architects and architectural theorists attempted to explain this relationship. Additionally, a number of key building types developed in the period, the function of which relate directly to the body. Throughout the semester, we will examine the theoretical relationship between architecture, architects, and the body in the period, before turning to a focused examination of relevant building types. On the way, we will encounter early modern attitudes to such issues as science, health, insanity, death, gender, crime, and politics. |
