Course description | This course is in two parts that run concurrently throughout the semester. The core lecture course is a survey of Scottish architecture from mediaeval times to the present day. Alongside that, the students will take a seminar looking in more detail at case studies of real conservation projects, to provide deeper insight into certain areas of the core material, e.g. a particular building type. This will also bring their studies up to date in that this part of the course will also discuss the conservation of historic structures. |

Academic description |
The combination of these two types of study will provide the students with a very thorough grounding in Scottish Architectural history but will also begin to develop skills in 'reading' buildings and in learning how to go about researching a building, using a multiplicity of source materials. The seminar series is intended to bring into play skills that will be useful for anyone intending to pursue a career in the conservation and heritage fields and will alert students to further possibilities for study and/or should make them more employable by bodies like Historic Scotland and English Heritage. In 2010-11 the seminar will be taken by a research fellow who is extremely eminent in this field. |
