| Course description | Arguably Barcelona was one of the most fascinating cities in Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: comparable to Berlin, Brussels, Glasgow, Paris and Vienna. It underwent rapid transformation over this period, producing the material conditions for a new urban culture and one of the most creative periods in the arts. Focusing on Modernisme, Noucentisme, the avant-garde and rationalist architecture, this course provides a study of architecture in Barcelona from the late 19th century (e.g. works by Gaudi, Puig i Cadafalch, Domenech i Montaner) until the early 1930s (e.g. GATCPAC, Sert) within the historical, political and artistic contexts. It considers the relationship between architecture and the other arts – painting, sculpture, the decorative arts - and explores how Catalan architects derived inspiration from local traditions, while creating their own, innovative ‘modernity’. The course also considers some of the parallels between Catalan architecture and other movements in Europe. Instead of trying to determine who was first to promote a new architectural language, we examine to what extent Catalan architects tried to answer questions that also engaged their counterparts in other European cities. |
