Indicative Module Content
Approaches to intervention in urban areas; use of precedent; urban context; survey and analysis of existing areas; evaluation of the needs and opportunities; exploration of alternatives for use, movement, built form and open space; development of urban design frameworks including physical, management, social and economic considerations.
The development of a three-dimensional form for a master plan based on an urban design framework. The organisation of activities will be refined. Typologies of built form will be developed. The landscape structure for a master plan will be considered. The role of landscape in the detailed design of an urban area will be explored. The movement structure for a master plan will be considered. The role of traffic and transport in the detailed design of an urban area will be explored
Aims of Module
1. To provide an appreciation of the complexity inherent in urban design issues
2. To illustrate the multi-client and interdisciplinary nature of urban design
3. To consider and apply methods and techniques for evaluating and designing in the urban environment

On completion of this module, the student is expected to:
1. as part of a team, design, execute, conclude and communicate an investigative evaluation of a location and its cultural, socio-economic and physical context
2. demonstrate a critical understanding of a range of theories of urban development and how they are applied to create a strategic urban design framework
3. display abilities in the detailed design of urban areas and illustrate an understanding of the relevant processes associated with the implementation of the detailed design
