| Course description | This module provides the student with an opportunity to investigate an architectural topic under the supervision of a member of academic staff. The student will undertake sustained and in-depth research and present a coherently argued, fully referenced and appropriately illustrated piece of academic writing. Preparation and research for the module is undertaken in the first Semester. This provides the student with an opportunity to plan and organize the study materials and research methods required in the writing of the Dissertation, and culminates in the submission of a synopsis and bibliography. In the second Semester, the dissertation is developed and written. Course Aims:
1. Develop research methods relevant to writing a Dissertation.
2. Develop the student&©s intellectual curiosity relating to the Dissertation topic.
3. Gain knowledge of a specific aspect of architectural history, theory, philosophy, and design, of technology and environment, or of related disciplines of arts, cultural studies and landscape, and their application to critical debate.
4. Develop skills in the use of library and research sources including the use of websites and electronic methods of deriving information.
5. Develop skills in correct writing style, grammar, syntax and the use and acknowledgement of sources. |

| Additional Costs | Expenditure may be incurred in making study visits building sites and archives to gather information
Further expenditure is required in the creation of the Dissertation. Processes and materials involved in the presentation of their work: printing and reprographic charges, photographic costs and binding.

Introductory session followed by self-directed learning throughtout Semester 1 while the students are in Placement. Supervision in Semester 2 of Senior Honours at times to be arranged with individual tutors. Three lectures will be held in Semester 2 (once returning from Placement):

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Introduce the student to research methods relevant to writing a dissertation
On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to demonstrate:
1. Detailed knowledge of the chosen subject [GC2, GC3, in many cases also GC4-9]
2. Sufficient understanding of relevant cultural, historical and philosophical themes, and an ability to integrate these into a thesis. [as in Course Aims]
3. Ability of construct and synthesize an intellectual argument with some original conclusions. [as in Course Aims]
4. Production of a substantial piece of academic writing, a coherent and attractive illustrated text, well written and using correct referencing conventions.
