| Course description | The course is concerned with contemporary building technology and the construction and design of steel and concrete framed structures. The manner in which buildings are constructed is continually changing, responding to cultural, social, and technological conditions. During the next forty years (the probable length of your career) the means available to construct buildings will have changed radically. Traditional construction methods and techniques are being replaced by increased industrialistion and prefabrication. New disciplines and roles are evolving for the design teams. Each new project raises new issues for the design team and their builders. Change is an inherent characteristic of the construction industry. Designers need to approach the use of technology with this in mind, in an informed rather than an empirical manner. It is not possible to provide a truly comprehensive review of the technology used in contemporary buildings, which by definition is constantly changing. Instead, key issues concerning contemporary technology are raised by focusing on a series of relevant topics. Case studies will be used throughout. The topics include: Concrete and steel framed buildings; The building envelope; Manufacturing processes; Industrialised construction. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
1. Students will understand the key differences informing the design of steel and concrete structures
