* No previous knowledge of Portuguese is necessary: a pass in a modern foreign language or a classical language at SCE Higher grade or equivalent evidence of linguistic proficiency is normally required.
† Entry to Honours normally requires in all cases a pass at the first attempt at 50% or above in the second year of the relevant Modern European Language and either a pass in English Language 2 or a pass at the first attempt in Linguistics 2A and Linguistics 2B or 2Lh if 2B is not taken, with an average across the two of 50% or above.
# Students may take either (i) MEL dissertation preparation in year 3 and MEL dissertation completion in year 4 or (ii) Dissertation Preparation Abroad (Language Sciences) in year 3 and Dissertation Completion following Study Abroad (Language Sciences) in year 4. If students take option (ii), they must spend their year abroad at a university where they can study appropriate courses in Linguistics or English Language (see the regulations for Year Abroad Work for Degrees in Modern European Languages and Linguistics or English Language for full details). 
** Pre-requisite - A Scandinavian language in Year 1
Final Assessment
One unit of assessment is allocated to every 20 credits and constitutes one 20-credit paper. The following are the twelve 20-credit papers on which the classification of the degree is based. (Papers that for the purposes of degree classification acquire a weighting of 40 credits are, therefore, listed twice.)

3. MEL Language Paper 2
4. Oral
5. Year abroad work for MEL / LEL degrees
6. Year abroad work for MEL / LEL degrees
7. MEL Dissertation Preparation or LEL Preparation Abroad (same mark as 8) or SOCRATES marks
8. MEL Dissertation Completion or Dissertation completion following study abroad (Language Sciences) or Long Essay
