The main aim of this course is to expand the students' musical awareness by developing a perceptive and analytical approach to listening.

? Additional Class Information : Taught in 2 tutorial groups in Weeks 2-5 and 7-10. Students will be assigned to tutorial groups at the beginning of the academic session.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

- Students will develop their listening skills through the aural analysis of a wide range of musical pieces.
- Students will acquire a broad knowledge of various elements of musical expression, such as pitch, rhythm, timbre, texture and structure.
- Students will understand the basic principles of spatial music and graphic notation.
- Students will be able to recognise aurally various more complex harmonic progressions.
- Students will be capable of accurately transcribing more complex melodic (including atonal) and four-part harmonic dictations.

Assessment Information

One class examination (100%).
