Introduction to Professional Studies - the course is the first of progressive courses in each year of the BVM&S degree programme. The first year course will cover what is expected of a professional, introduce self-appraisal and recording progress, to be continued in future years. The emphasis will be on establishing an understanding of basic professional attributes and behaviour, with a focus on self-appraisal, group working and study skills. Linkages will be made with other courses where aspects of professionalism are highlighted.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

1) Be aware of career paths and roles in the veterinary profession
2) Accept the personal attributes and behaviours required of a professional
3) Engage in reflective activity in terms of self-appraisal
4) Recognise the importance of good communication
5) Recognise factors affecting group relationships
6) Recognise sources of stress and methods for mitigating it.
7) Communicate effectively within a small group
8) Develop effective time management, independent learning and study skills
9) Demonstrate competence in Information Technology
10) Debate current veterinary issues in society.
