Frontiers in Geophysics (U04320)

This course will engage students with the cutting edge of research into geophysics. Topics of current research interest will be chosen, which will vary from year to year. Students will be set to read the best papers in these fields and to discuss the issues involved in the research in round-table sessions coordinated by the Course Organiser. Underlying issues about research methodology and the development and evolution of a scientific paradigm will be addressed.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Year 3 of BSc Geophysics or BSc Geophysics & Meteorology.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

1. To be aware of the cutting edge of research in geophysics
2. To be able to synthesis complicated and forming ideas presented via academic, peer reviewed journals.
3. To be able to discuss how science moves from one type of world view, or model of an operational system, to another, giving examples for the coursework.

Assessment Information

Assessment will be by posters, presented by the student on the research topic of their choice. A session on designing and producing academic posters will be given.
