The course provides an introduction to the breadth of biological, social and clinical sciences particularly by organ systems. The course maintains a holistic and patient-centred perspective ? together with a professional and ethical understanding. The course is made up of three principal strands which are co-ordinated and integrated by problem-based learning scenarios, through the module Introduction to Life. The module will include some biomedical science, behavioural and psychosocial science (which are the two major strands) and clinical science, but to varying proportions. The interrelationship of biological, psychological and social factors in the causation of disease and on the ability of patients to be cured of or to live with the disease will be demonstrated and serve to emphasize that all learning is relevant to the practice of medicine. There will be some early patient contact.
