Philosophy Dissertation - Part 1: Preparation (U04258)

This course is designed to enable students to prepare thoroughly for researching, writing and submitting a dissertation in Philosophy. Students will receive guidance on identifying a suitable area for research, constructing a research proposal and preparing an annotated bibliography / literature review, through a combination of seminars, proposal-writing workshops and library exercises.

? This course is not available to visting students.

? Pre-requisites : Philosophy 2A (PP0033) or Philosophy 2B (PP0034) or equivalent.

? Additional Class Information : Students will receive c. 12 hours contact-time, included 5 x two-hour seminars in the first semester.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, students will be able to:-
- construct a concise and practical research proposal;
- make optimal use of available resources and explore topics through independent study;
- identify and utilise relevant texts as part of their research;
- be in a position to proceed to the the primary researching and writing-up of their dissertation in Year 4.

Assessment Information

? A dissertation proposal that outlines the aims, methods and (preliminary) conclusions of the project to be undertaken.
? An annotated bibliography/literature review that refers to the main primary and secondary works in the field of study indicated.
