Chemical Engineering Unit Operations 3 (U04236)

? Credit Points : 10  ? SCQF Level : 9  ? Acronym : EEL-3-CHCEUO

Unit Operations extends earlier treatment of stagewise equilibrium processes to numerical solutions for absorption and stripping in multicomponent systems, graphical solutions for binary distillation in the case of non-constant molal overflow and the analogous case of solvent extraction. Multicomponent equilibria and both short-cut and extended solutions for multicomponent flash and distillation are also treated. In addition, there is an introduction to mass transfer operations in packed columns.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

- determine graphically or analytically the number of stages in an absorption or stripping column;
- analyse critically the choice of stage vs. packed column;
- size an absorption or stripping packed column for dilute and non-dilute gas systems;
- design a multicomponent distillation column using group methods and stage-by-stage (rigorous) methods.
