By the end of the course, students should be able to:
show an understanding of the aims and methods of dialectologists; understand how results from dialectological surveys are of relevance to other aspects of linguistic enquiry (e.g. historical linguistics and linguistic theory); conduct a small scale dialectological survey of their own. One 4,000 word project involving the collection and anlaysis of dialect data in the British Isles from any period.
