Music Production comprises an introduction to sound recording and MIDI sequencing based mainly around the recording studio and emphasising the constructed nature of recorded sound.

? Additional Class Information : Lectures week 2,4,7 and 9; Practical sessions held in the Electroacoustic Music Studios in smaller groups (assigned in Freshers' Week) weeks 3,5,8 and 10.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

+ Students will be able to make recordings in various styles within a studio setting with confidence and with an awareness of the technical and aesthetic issues such recordings involve.
+ They will gain a basic understanding of the cultural and aesthetic issues that surround the making of studio based sound recordings and using MIDI.
+ Students will understand the MIDI protocol.
+ They will understand various MIDI devices, in particular hardware and software for synthesis and sampling.
+They will operate a sequencing application within a recording studio environment with technical and aesthetic success.

Assessment Information

Two pieces of coursework (20% each); one studio-based recording incorporating both sound recordings and MIDI sequencing, minimum length 5 minutes, maximum length 15 minutes, and one report, maximum 2,000 words (60%).
