Academic English for International Students 1 (pm) (U03955)

This course is designed to raise the participants' English language and study skills to the point where they are able to participate fully in courses of their choice offered in undergraduate programmes of study. There are five principal strands: Listening and note-taking; Reading and text analysis; Discussion skills; Academic writing; and Presentation skills.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Overall 6.0 IELTS with a minimum of 5.0 in each section (or TOEFL equivalents).

? Prohibited combinations : U03885 Academic English for International Students 1, which is the morning version of this course.

? Special Arrangements for Entry : *Please note that admission to this class is very limited.*

Please therefore refer ANY interested students to Alex Baker in the CHSS Visiting Student Office (2.19 DHT; 50 4094/3572) in the first instance to check for spaces and arrange enrolment.

? Costs : Approximately £30 to buy the two set textbooks: "Study Listening" ISBN 9780521 533874 and "Study Speaking" ISBN 9780521 33966. It is NOT necessary to buy their accompanying audio CDs.

? Additional Class Information : Sessions begin on Monday 29 September 2008. Students should bring the set book "Study Listening", which is used at the opening session. The book is stocked at Blackwells.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will have:
- increased the efficiency of their note-taking from speech
- developed their critical reading and thinking
- given, and received feedback on, a spoken presentation to the group
- become familiar with citation and referencing conventions
- written a critical review of two academic articles

Assessment Information

- A written assignment (1,000-1,200 words): a critical review of two journal articles
- A 10-minute oral presentation, followed by group discussion
