This course will examine a wide range of Virginia Woolf's published writings, including her fiction, essays, letters and diaries. Its aims are: to gain an understanding of the literary development of one of the most significant writers of the twentieth century; to examine the ways in which she and a number of her contemporaries sought to remake the genre of the novel in and for the early twentieth century; to exploer the literary, cultural and political contexts of her time. In this last context, the focus will be on topics including feminist and writing, modernism and the metropolis, literature and the new technologies (photography, film, radio), literature and politics, the writer in wartime. The course will close with a discussion of Woolf's legacy for the contemporary novelist.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Passes in English or Scottish Literature 1 and English, or Scottish, or American Literature 2, with a mark of 50 or above at the first attempt in the second year course.

? Special Arrangements for Entry : Numbers are limited to 15, with priority given to students taking degrees involving English or Scottish Literature and Visiting Students placed by the Admissions Office. Students not in these categories need the written approval of the Head of English Literature before enrolling. In the case of excess applications places will be decided by ballot.
