The course aims to develop advanced language skills through regular unseen translation from Latin into English and through study of one of the following topics: Latin metre; Latin textual criticism; Latin prose; Roman rhetoric.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : A pass in Latin 2A and Latin 2B, with an average of 50% or above in the two courses combined.

? Prohibited combinations : Cannot be taken with U01142 Latin Language (A).

? Special Arrangements for Entry : This course is only open to students who will be absent from Edinburgh in Semester 2. In order for a student to be enrolled, contact must be made with a Course Secretary on 50 3580 for approval to be obtained.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate in the written degree examination:
that they can translate into good English a range of unseen Latin texts, both prose and verse, with a high degree of fluency and accuracy;
that they have achieved competence in a range of skills-based topics in Latin language.

In addition, they will have improved their linguistic abilities in general, their analytical skills, and their literary appreciation.
