Political Theory and European Integration (U02826)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : SPS-3-POPTEI

Building on knowledge and skills gained from previous studies in political theory and in the EU, the course will examine normative theoretical issues and debates in European integration, such as the democratic deficit, the political legitimacy of the EU, citizenship and identity or identities, political community and constitutionalism. The course runs as a 2-hour seminar based on substantial student preparation, not on the lecture+tutorial model. (There are no lectures.)

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Students should have some background in both political theory and in EU politics.

? Special Arrangements for Entry : Special Arrangements for Entry: A quota of 45 students, with preference given in the following order:

(1) Politics Single Honours 4th year;
(2) International Relations Single Honours 4th year;
(3) Politics Joint Honours 4th year;
(4) Politics Single Honours 3rd year;
(5) International Relations Single Honours 3rd year;
(6) Politics Joint Honours 3rd year;
(7) Other SSPS students;
(8) Non-SSPS students

Please note: because of the high numbers of students enrolled, this course will almost certainly not be able to admit students from outside the College of Humanities and Social Science.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students should have developed their skills in research, communication, task management, debate, analysis, critique, the evaluation of theoretical and empirical claims, the capacity to compose coherent arguments, the exercise of judgement after reflection, the understanding of core propositions in political theory, be familiar with key texts and scholarship in the field, be able to identify normative questions arising from European integration, be able to draw accurately and fruitfully on a variety of disciplinary approaches and models in understanding politics in the EU.

Assessment Information

100% on coursework by means of a 4,000 - 4,500 word essay
