Islamic History 1 (U02153)? Credit Points : 40 ? SCQF Level : 8 ? Acronym : LLC-1-U02153 This course is an introduction to the history of the Islamic world from 550 to 1600 CE. The first semester covers the pre-Islamic background to Islam, the life of the Prophet Muhammad, the Arab conquests, the formation of the first Muslim world empire (the Caliphate) and its fragmentation into a ‘commonwealth’ of successor states (550–1050). The second semester surveys the Islamic world from 1050–1600, including the Seljuk Turks, the Crusades, the Mongol invasions, the formation of the Ottoman and Safavid empires and the expansion of Islam into Africa and and Central and South Asia.
