Islamic History 1 (U02153)

This course is an introduction to the history of the Islamic world from 550 to 1600 CE. The first semester covers the pre-Islamic background to Islam, the life of the Prophet Muhammad, the Arab conquests, the formation of the first Muslim world empire (the Caliphate) and its fragmentation into a ‘commonwealth’ of successor states (550–1050). The second semester surveys the Islamic world from 1050–1600, including the Seljuk Turks, the Crusades, the Mongol invasions, the formation of the Ottoman and Safavid empires and the expansion of Islam into Africa and and Central and South Asia.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

1) Basic understanding of Middle Eastern history 550-1600.

2) Enhanced ability to pose meaningful historical questions and to evaluate them critically.

3) Improved skills in research and written and oral presentation.

Assessment Information

Examination: two 2 hour exams (55%)
Coursework:
two essays of 2000 words (30%)
two mid-semester tests (10%)
Seminar participation (5%)
