Creative Writing Part 2: Prose (U01996)

The course aims by seminar and workshop to introduce students to theoretical and practical issues involved in the composition of prose fiction. Issues to be addressed include: point of view, character and voice, structure and plot.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Passes in English or Scottish Literature 1 and English or Scottish Literature 2, with a mark of 50 or above at the first attempt in the second year course.

? Special Arrangements for Entry : Numbers are limited and students taking degrees not involving English or Scottish literature need the written approval of the head of English Literature

? Costs : Essential course texts

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the course successfully will attain a broadened awareness of stylistic possibilities in prose fiction. By practice they will develop compositional skills and critical self-assessment in a way that complements more general English studies, and be introduced to the possibilities of publishing their work.

Portfolio of creative work (25%); exam assignment (75%)
