Ethical, Legal and Social issues in Child Health (U00274)

The course is divided into three sections.
The first section considers the development of child care policy and legislation.
- The development of child care policy. Explores the history and development of the child care policy and international conventions at UN and European Union level which advance the rights of the child
- The rights of the child and parental rights. Explores the issue of child and parental rights as set out in UK legislation.
- Child protection and welfare. Continues with consideration of the UK legislation, this time relating specifically to the issue of child protection and meeting the needs of the child.

The second section considers ethical issues relating to child health practices.
- Pre-natal screening and foetal selection
- Decisions to withdraw or withhold treatment in the neo-natal unit.

The third section considers social issues and their impact on child health.
- Domestic Violence. Considers how domestic violence impacts on the health of children.
- Poverty and deprivation. Considers the meaning of poverty and deprivation and the direct and indirect impact on child health.
- Minorities and refugees. Considers the health care of children from ethnic minorities.
- Adolescent suicide. Examines suicide patterns historically and intenrationally. Explores current government initiatives to address the problem.
- Teenage pregnancy. Explores teenage pregnance and debates to what extent teenage pregnancy is a health issue.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The student should be able to:
- appreciate and understand the legislative framework which underpins child health decisions.
- Discuss the rights of the child and his/her role within the health care decision making process
- Discuss the ethical decision making process and identify their role within that process
- Critically examine theories on the relationship between social factors and health status
- Assess the impact of social and cultural influences on the health of their own client group
- Utilise the understanding gained to enhance the quality of care they deliver and their own professional practice
