African Voices in the Study of Religions (U00145)

Analysis of selected foundational African scholars who have contributed to the academic study of religions, how they appropriated or transformed Western concepts and in what ways they suggest uniquely African approaches within Religious Studies. Counts towards requirements in Indigenous Religions.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:
- articulate the problems associated with building theories of religion from African perpectives;
- differentiate between African interpretations and the appropriation of Western concepts as if they were indigenous;
- critically analyse the approaches to the study of religions by the African scholars examined; explain the relevance of post-colonial perspectives to African views of Religious Studies;
- express in written and verbal forms how competing theories in the study of religions by African scholar critique each other.

Assessment Information

Assessment will be calculated in the following ways: Degree Examination (60%); Essay of 2000-2500 words (30%); Seminar Presentation and Participation (10%).
