Scottish Ethnology 2 (SC0002)

This course is designed to build on the introduction to Scottish Ethnology given in the first year, with an emphasis on skills, resources and issues for ethnologists. It includes components on archive and fieldwork methodology, music and song, narrative, maps and place-names, visual resources, dictionary and linguistic surveys, and community case studies.

Entry Requirements

? This course is not available to visting students.

? Pre-requisites : Normally a pass at the first attempt in the degree examination for Scottish Ethnology 1.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students should have

? gained practical experience of using visual and sound archives and relevant databases, as well as maps and place names, as sources of ethnological evidence
? gained increased knowledge of cultural expression in terms of narrative, instrumental and vocal music, and among Scottish Travellers and fairground families
? learned basic methods of transcribing recorded texts
? engaged with a range of relevant ethnological texts and other data and the issues which these pose
? undertaken original research based on field and archival work
? gained further understanding of the issues associated with fieldwork
? gained confidence in presenting the results of personal study and research in oral and written form

Assessment Information

2 essays (1 x 1500-2000 words; 1 x 2500-3000 words); 1 project (5000 words); 1 three-hour degree exam. Essays 20% (10% each); project 30%; Degree exam 50%.
