An introduction to the central methods and concerns of the discipline of ethnology. The theme of cultural tradition is investigated through the concepts of performance, transmission and cultural representation using example material drawn largely, although not exclusively, from Scotland.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students should have:
- gained practical experience in conducting ethnological interviews;
- actively engaged with core ethnological primary and secondary texts and other media;
- developed a critical appreciation of modes of traditional performance delivery, transmission and cultural representation;
- gained experience of producing critical texts on ethological issues and problems through course work tasks;
- enhanced confidence in group discussion participation and presentation of ideas.

Assessment Information

Course work (50% of total mark): one essay of 3000 words, week 10; one essay, 3000 words, week 22. Degree examination: one three-hour paper comprising 50% of total mark.
