Scottish Philosophy (PP0086)

The course will present the thought of leading thinkers of the Scottish Enlightenment, such as Francis Hutcheson, David Hume, Adam Smith and Thomas Reid, focusing on their ethical and aesthetic views. Subjects covered will include such topics as the role of reason and sentiment in moral judgement, the idea of a moral sense, the standard of taste, virtue, justice, duty, and freedom and necessity. The relevance of these ideas to modern debates will also be discussed.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students should have acquired
an understanding of the thought of some major Scottish philosophers on moral and aesthetic issues.
an understanding of how these issues relate to continuing debates.
an ability to read closely, analyse and criticise early modern philosophical texts.
They should also have further developed the following skills
written skills
the ability to take part in group discussion
the ability to present and defend arguments
the ability to understand and analyse arguments

Assessment Information

The course will be assessed by a short (maximum 1500 word) essay due about the middle of the semester (30%), and a final exam in the standard exam conditions worth 70%
